So far, so good! Progress is happening on the impending green revolution of Hoosier Courts Cooperative Nursery School (HCCNS). At my initial meeting with the school's director, Carol, she expressed great enthusiasm for the concept, and joy at the offer of help! Together, we outlined the major areas to tackle:
1. Get a bicycle rack outside the school
2. Find out if HCCNS' electricity use is metered-- if it is not, find out how to get it metered. If it is, run an analysis of the school's electricity usage.
3. Get an energy audit of HCCNS performed
4. Get a composter
5. Get a commercial dishwasher installed
6. Buy reusable plates, cups, etc.
7. Get the school's recycling picked up by IU
8. See if we can reinstitute the SCRIP program at Bloomingfoods and other grocery stores to raise funds for green programs at the school
So far, I have made initial contacts with all of the gatekeepers/allies on all of these fronts. I am happy to report that the IU Office of Risk Management approved the commercial dishwasher, and the Physical Plant came out to the school to measure and plan for installation. Funds have been approved; now it is a matter of movement on the part of the Physical Plant.
For all of these projects, next comes the work of determining details, staying on people's radars, and implementation. Stay tuned...and have fun.

ReplyDeleteI saw that one of your tasks is finding out if electricity is being tracked and metered. My Dad's company, which is local to Bloomington, sells sustainability dashboards that track and measure sustainability use.. not only in energy, but also water, waste/recycling, transportation an then a wider consumption category.
The Atlanta School District just started using the program, and we are assuming many other schools around the country will also start using it. If you're interested I could show you, or HCCNS the dashboard. Also as a note, it's super cheap and easy to use and intended to be used by small companies.
